Red-tailed Hawk Facts:

  • Red-tailed Hawks are the most widespread and familiar large hawk in North America and can often be observed perched on road signs, trees, or atop power poles.
  • Red-tailed Hawks’ habitat includes open country, woodlands, prairie groves, mountains, plains, roadsides – any kind of terrain that provides both some open ground for hunting and some high perches.
  • Their diet varies by region and includes such prey as voles, rats, rabbits, ground squirrels, birds (up to size of pheasant), and reptiles, especially snakes. They occasionally consume bats, frogs, toads, insects, and other creatures.
